Weekly Action & Updates for June 30

Hello fellow Indivisible St. Johnsbury members,

We continue to live in almost unfathomably heartbreaking times, yet I continue to feel inspired and hopeful by all of you -- especially your determination and your stubbornness in the best sense of the word. We will not back down or stop no matter what. We will continue to work to meet the needs of our neighbors and community and press for a fairer, more just world.

As Rebecca Solnit says, “Your opponents would love you to believe it’s hopeless, that you have no power, that there’s no reason to act, that you can’t win. Hope is a gift you don’t have to surrender, a power you don’t have to throw away.”

So let’s never surrender our hope.

Your Feedback is Needed

Indivisible St. Johnsbury wants to hear from you. If you didn’t fill out the survey at our last in-person meeting on June 25th, please fill out our three question survey. We want to know what’s working, how we can improve, and your suggestions.

Indivisible Actions

Action Alert: Time is of the essence to try and stop the horrible reconciliation bill from passing Congress. We need to make calls this Monday, June 30.

Betsy Taylor from our fellow Vermont Indivisible chapter Northeast Addison County Indivisible states that we should all push Gov. Scott and other Republican leaders in Vermont to express their opposition to the bill to US Senate Republicans. Here is the action alert she asked us to pass on to our chapters:

Hold Republicans in Vermont Accountable

Demand Action NOW

Action Alert for Local Chapters of Indivisible:  The US Congress, controlled by Republicans, is preparing to pass a federal budget bill that will do great harm to Vermont.  Our local and state Republican elected leaders are not standing up for Vermont.  This bill will cut healthcare, food assistance, and other essential programs while giving tax breaks to billionaires.

Contact Governor Phil Scott, Lt Governor John Rodgers, Senate Minority Leader Scott Beck, House Minority Leader Patricia McCoy, and your local elected Republicans. Do it today!

Urge them to contact US Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Majority Whip John Barasso, and the White House to express opposition to the bill’s harmful impacts on Vermont. They need to use their influence on the Republican party to stop this horrendous bill.Ask them to report back to you on their actions. Our futures are at stake and our Republican officials are being silent even though tens of thousands in Vermont may lose health care coverage and thousands more will go hungry while Elon Musk and billionaires get big tax breaks.

If you have a moment, also call our senators and urge them to do everything in their power to stop this bill.

Finally, regardless of where you live, you can join a phonebank to help drive constituent calls to target Members of Congress. Indivisible's national organization is running phonebanks with MoveOn and Working Families on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

Next Meeting: Wednesday

This is a work group session. Please find your group and be prepared to focus on a specific topic:

  • National. This is for people who want to work at the national level including elections in other states.

  • State/Local. This is for those who want to focus their work on issues at the state and local level like going to local selectboard meetings, asking questions at the monthly legislative breakfasts, and tracking state legislation and responses to federal cuts.

  • Protests and Events. People who want to coordinate our monthly protests as well as work in mutual aid like our monthly meals to the homeless shelter can attend this workgroup.

  • Communications. We are a rapidly growing group with a number of communications needs and opportunities. People interested in helping map out a communications plan, writing letters to editors, updating our website and mailing list as well as social media presence will find a place in this group.

  • Education. This is a group where we can draw from the wisdom and experience of those in the group as well as those who came before us to help make our activism is grounded in sound principles.

We meet upstairs in the sanctuary, accessible from the Cherry Street parking lot. Please park on the street or in the lot north of the building -- the lot at Eastern and Cherry is for another property. Find more details and maps at https://indivisiblestjohnsbury.org/meetings
