Legislative Session Timing/Schedule
Vermont’s legislative session spans from the first week of January through (approximately) the first couple of weeks of May. During this time, legislators work in a hybrid setting every Tuesday through Friday.
Each year there is a one week break that allows legislators to attend Town Meeting in March.
After Town Meeting Day and the one-week break comes a time called Crossover. This is a make-or-break period in the legislative session. If bills do not “crossover” to the other side, they usually die. This means that it is imperative to reach out to your legislators to support bills that you care about before Town Meeting Day each year. Your voice is important.
What is a biennium?
Vermont is one of 46 states that use some variation of a “biennium system”. This means that both the Governor and all State Legislators are up for reelection every two years.
Vermont’s next gubernatorial and legislative elections will take place on November 4, 2026. Please plan ahead and stay tuned to learn more about emerging candidates.
